The Photo Session - How to Prepare

Samantha is an older cat with a calm outlook on life. All she really wants is love, attention, and someplace warm and cozy to lay down. She absolutely loves all the attention she gets during a photo shoot! Not to mention the nice soft backdrop covering the table.

The Creative Meeting was a huge success. Your Photo Session date is set. You are looking forward to meeting your photographer face to face and making some amazing memories with your pet. Now that the date is almost here, now what?

Take a deep breath. Calm down. There is no reason to worry. There are a few things you can do before your Photo Session that can make things go a lot smoother and make it successful. Follow these tips and we will be able to create some beautiful memories!

  1. Make sure to send any necessary proof of vaccination to the photographer by the requested due date.

  2. If necessary, have your pet groomed, or groom your pet, at least 48 hours before your photo session. You want your pet to look their best for their big day!

  3. Brush your pet the morning of your Photo Session.

  4. Make sure your pet’s nails look good and trim them if needed.

  5. Prepare a backpack of supplies for the Photo Session the night before. Include things like one of your pet’s favorite toys, any props you may want included in your pet’s portraits including wearables like bandanas or fancy collars, a narrow leash if you have one for dogs or sometimes even cats, some of your pet’s favorite treats, your pet’s brush, a water bottle and travel bowl, a hand towel, and anything else you may find useful or that you and your photographer discussed ahead of time.

  6. Give your pet only a half portion of their regular meal the morning of your photo shoot. A hungry animal is more likely to work for treats than a full one!

  7. If you have a high energy dog, take them for a short walk and let them sniff around before the Photo Session. For a high energy cat, play with their favorite toy for a few minutes before the Photo Session to bring down their energy a bit.

  8. If you plan on being in some of the portraits, don’t forget to groom yourself and choose your outfit carefully. You may also want to bring an extra outfit in case of a slobber emergency!

  9. Relax! You’ve got this. Your pet will feel much more at ease in a new location if you are able to relax and show them there is nothing to worry about.

  10. Get a good night’s sleep! You want to be looking your best if you are going to be in any of the portraits!

This was a very fast and precise list of things to do to prepare for your pet’s Photo Session. Follow these steps and you should get through your day just fine. And always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask your photographer!
