But My Dog Needs To Be On A Leash!

“I can’t get photos taken of my dog. He needs to be on a leash!”

“My dog will run off and I will never see him again. I can’t get photos done like those!”

“My dog is way too active. He will never sit still for photos!”

Do any of these things go through your head when you look at professional photos of other people’s dogs? Don’t worry. You are certainly NOT alone. The majority of dogs that are photographed by professional photographers actually have very little training to pose for photos, if they have any at all. It is one of my policies that all pets photographed outside need to be on a leash or in a secure enclosure depending on the breed and species of pet we are photographing. So, dogs, cats, ferrets, and other animals that do well with a leash must be on a leash. Other small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs need to be in a secure enclosure to keep them safe.

“OK. Then how did you photograph those other dogs without a leash?” you may be asking.

Here’s the deal. We didn’t! Every dog or cat or ferret, etc., that we photograph outside has a leash. Through the magic of post processing, I am able to remove the leash from the photographs. Don’t believe me? Here are a couple of examples before leash removal and the final photo. I swear, it’s magic!

Here you see a photograph that is not yet edited. This dog obviously is wearing a leash and sitting for his photograph to be taken.

This is the same photograph as shown before with the leash edited out. It is very difficult to tell there was ever a leash in this photograph.

Again, here is a photograph that is not yet edited. This leash is very obvious in this photograph.

Here is the same photograph after editing out the leash. Again, it is very difficult to tell that a leash was ever there.
